Sparta 2030 Community Discussion to Focus on Downtown Revitalization and Future Economic Growth

The community is invited to join Senator Brad Pfaff, state agency representatives, local business leaders, and residents for an open discussion on Sparta’s future

SPARTA, WI. — The Shovelmen, together with the Sparta Area Chamber of Commerce, will host “Sparta 2030,” a community discussion focused on the future of Sparta’s downtown and broader business community. The event will be held Thursday, October 15, 2026, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. in the lower-level Community Room of the Sparta Free Library, 124 West Main Street.

Joining the discussion will be State Senator Brad Pfaff, along with representatives from the Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation (WEDC) and the Wisconsin Department of Revenue. Their participation will bring state-level perspectives, resources, and experience to a conversation intended to generate ideas and begin developing a shared vision for Sparta’s economic future.

The purpose of Sparta 2030 is not simply to discuss the challenges facing the community, but to begin establishing the steppingstones toward an actionable plan for strengthening Sparta’s business environment and re-energizing its historic downtown.

Among the topics to be explored will be Sparta’s aging downtown building inventory and the opportunities and challenges associated with adapting historic properties for continued economic use. The discussion will also examine mixed-use development—particularly buildings combining street-level retail and commercial space with residential uses on upper floors—and the role that downtown housing can play in increasing activity, supporting local businesses, and creating a more vibrant city center.

Participants will also explore financial resources and assistance available from outside the immediate community, as well as examples of approaches other Wisconsin communities have used to reinvest in historic buildings and position their downtown districts for long-term economic viability.

Sparta 2030 is intended to be a community conversation. Residents, property owners, business owners, civic organizations, local officials, and anyone interested in Sparta’s future are encouraged to attend, ask questions, and share ideas.

A model for the discussion can already be found within Sparta. The Sparta South Pointe Business Park began with a vision, followed by a plan and ultimately its execution. That effort has produced tangible results and is now being expanded. Sparta 2030 seeks to bring that same deliberate, forward-looking approach to the next generation of economic opportunities facing the community.

The goal is to bring people together, identify common priorities, and begin crafting a plan that allows the community to move forward in the same direction toward a clearly defined vision for Sparta 2030.
