Top Summer Festivals in Monroe County: A Perfect Wisconsin Weekend Getaway
Every summer, in the rolling hills of Wisconsin’s Driftless Region, Monroe County welcomes festivals infused with small-town charm, family fun, and some wholesome Midwest hospitality. Whether from Sparta’s Butterfest or from Tomah’s roaring tractor pulls and the classic county fair, Monroe County is impossible to forget. Monroe County is a fun summertime experience with some of the state’s most beautiful land, best trails, and friendly communities that make every visit feel like coming home.
Sparta Butterfest: A Slice of Small-Town Celebration
Sparta’s Butterfest, held June, in the Bicycling Capital of America, brings a burst of community spirit to kick off the heart of summer every year. Expect a lively carnival, flea market, live music, craft vendors, games for all ages, and a gigantic parade that winds through the center of town. It’s more than just rides and food (such as classic fair fare and local vendors); this festival was established as a community fundraiser.
Tomah’s Budweiser Dairyland Super National Truck & Tractor Pull: Pure Adrenaline in the Driftless
Tomah’s Recreation Park is home to one of the nation’s most historic pulling events, taking place this year in late June. Over three days of action-packed horsepower, thousands flock to the Tomah’s Budweiser Dairyland Super National Truck & Tractor Pull that highlights roaring engines, high-flying semis, and modified tractors. Outside of the dirt-track drama, you have camping vendors, flea markets, craft shows, great food, and family-friendly entertainment. Proud and oh-so-Wisconsin, perfect for thrill-seekers or anyone looking to wake up the summer in Monroe County.
Monroe County Fair: The Heart of a Classic Wisconsin Summer
In late July, Tomah‘s Recreation Park will transform again for the Monroe County Fair. A true summer staple for decades. Carnival rides spin from morning till night, fair food tempts with cheese curds, corn dogs, and cotton candy, and barns are filled with prize-winning animals and 4-H displays. See championship rodeo action, plus grandstand entertainment, and interactive “Learn N Earn” programs that educate kids (and adults) about agriculture in a hands-on format. 2026 Note: Watch for the Antique and Farm Tractor Pull (held on last Sunday, July 26, 2026) and the Car Show (also held on the last Sunday).
Quirky Small-Town Gems: Melvina Frog Days
Monroe County’s summer lineup shines brightest in its tiniest towns. Frog Days, complete with both kid and adult frog races, a 5K run/walk, softball and volleyball tournaments, live music, inflatables, and food, takes place in early August in Melvina. Watch our calendar for updates. On Sundays, be sure to get the local iconic dish, a whole charcoal chicken. It’s the essence of small-town fun. And plenty of local favorites take turns throughout the season, providing good times and Driftless hospitality.
What to Expect on Your Festival Weekend
The summer festivals of Monroe County are casual, family-friendly, and mix-and-matchable with outdoor activities. Combine the tractor pull on a Saturday with a bike ride along the Elroy-Sparta Trail, or extend a fair day into an overnight stay.
Campgrounds nearby, as well as small inns offering cozy accommodations. Most of the events include free or affordable parking, kid zones, and plenty of shade. The weather is often just perfect for outdoor plans, but pack a light jacket or two for a chilly shift in the evening and comfy footwear so you can walk between destinations. Trail towns and fairgrounds boast latrines, water stations, and small-town diners that will fill your bellies. For big events, such as the Sparta parade, Sportsman Field Day, or the Tomah Tractor Pull, get there early for parking and views.
Pro Tip: Book lodging early. Sparta, Tomah, and surrounding villages fill up fast during peak festival weekends. Combine your trip with a scenic drive through the unglaciated hills of the Driftless or a stop at local farm stands for fresh produce, cheese, and Amish goods.
